If you are starting to contemplate the idea of getting a divorce, that means that you have reached a point in your married life that is making you feel unhappy.

The decision to get a divorce should be given as much thought as the decision to tie the knot. And it should only be taken after at least a few attempts to turn things around and make them better.

The statistics used to be somewhat alarming but have considerably changed in the last years. According to the CDC/NCHS National Vital Statistics System, in 2017, the divorce rate in the United States was set at 2.9 per 1,000 total population (with a marriage rate of 6.9 per 1,000 total population).

These numbers are quite encouraging when compared to data from the late seventies and early eighties – in 1980, the divorce record in the United States was broken when the rate peaked at 5.3 per 1,000 total population (with a marriage rate of above 10 per 1,000 total population that should also be taken into account).

Although in some cases, a divorce can bring positive change, you must always fight for your relationship and not let it fall apart easily.

If you’re going through a similar experience, here are five questions to ask yourself when considering divorce that can help you come to a definite conclusion.

1. What happened?

As soon as you start feeling that you are no longer happy with your partner, ask yourself the question: what happened? Surely you guys used to be great together, so great that at one point, you promised to love each other for eternity and even signed a legal document to prove your commitment.

So, what happened? What changed? Try to identify the problem as soon as possible so you can start working on fixing it before it’s too late. You should communicate properly. Let your partner know that you feel that your marriage bond is wearing out and start actively trying to improve it together.
