Throughout our lifetime, we meet different people; some we call as our friends, some as our “soulmates,” and others as our best friends or second family.

Some friendships are destined to last for a lifetime while others are only temporary but, regardless, every friendship has an impact on our lives and personal growth to a certain extent; our friends are our support system, confidants, and the people we feel the most comfortable with.

In fact, scientific studies have shown that friendships play an important part in improving our health and extending longevity. Also, you may not need researchers to tell you this, but your friendships can also be a door to many career opportunities and success in the long run.

6. Your friend has betrayed you

Friendship is all about genuine love, support, and healthy and open communication, and most importantly, trust.

One of the biggest deal-breakers in every relationship or friendship is betrayal. If your most valued and trusted friend has betrayed your trust, like talking badly about you behind your back, leaking your secrets to other people, making advances on your partner, etc., it will be very difficult to confide in them again because not only did they break your heart but also your trust and possibly even their chances of ever winning it back.

There should be no room for a dishonest or unfaithful friendship in your life, so it’s only natural that you would want to end it.

5. They don’t make time for you

Do you know what the best feeling is? Knowing that a friend whom you love so much has got your back and will try their best to make time for you even when they’re busy. In short, knowing that they truly care.

Life and growing responsibilities can sure keep people apart, but if these people make an effort to reach out to each other, ask about how each other are doing, and still support or help one another in whatever way is possible, it means that their friendship is strong enough to withstand time or distance.

If your friend is no longer as committed to the friendship or shows that they would rather spend quality time with other friends than you, it is time for a serious discussion.

Confronting your friend can sure be stressful, but it’s better to express your feelings and how their behavior has hurt you. If your friend still ignores you or makes no efforts to seek you out, then ending the friendship might be the right thing to do.

4. You feel limited

Your friends should never make you feel limited or that you can’t be your genuine self or achieve the things that you want and need in life.

A friend who truly loves and cares about you wants the best for you, not the opposite. So, if your friend makes you feel like you can’t achieve whatever you want to achieve or that you are not enough, is definitely not a real friend.

Friends encourage us, they genuinely wish the best for us, and always leave us feeling like we can reach whatever goal or ambition we’ve set our sights on.

If you’re used to hearing your friend saying things like, “Do you really think you can do that?” or “that’s not something people like us can achieve,” you should know that those are some obvious red flags that your friendship is limiting your personal development or success.

3. They are jealous of your success

Again, your friends should never make you feel like you don’t deserve what you have worked so hard for.

A true friend shares your happiness and celebrates your success rather than feel jealous and bitter.

Yes, we are human and sometimes you just can’t help but feel envious of a friend’s success but what differentiates you from a toxic friend and a good friend is your to desire to succeed just like your friend did while also supporting them, instead of wishing that they lose whatever they have accomplished in life.

2. You feel drained when you’re with them

Many friendships have turned toxic and ended because of that, so don’t overlook the signs of a toxic friend.

If you always feel drained after hanging out with a friend or feel like your conversations are forced, or that you always have to watch your tongue when you’re not saying anything offensive but know that anything you say can be interpreted negatively or trigger an undesirable reaction, then you probably should reconsider your friendship.

A toxic friend makes you feel unappreciated, unheard, very anxious or even insulted whenever you’re with them. Whatever the reason, it is definitely not normal to feel emotionally drained in a friendship or any relationship. Friendships are meant to be a zone of peace and comfort, not anxiety.

At this rate, ending a friendship is only natural given the toxicity it has metamorphosed to.

1. They only call when they need something

A friend who only asks about you when they need something from you is no real friend! It’s as simple as that.

Maybe, this friend only calls when they want to borrow something from you, get you to help them with their work or studies, want a place to stay the night, or anything else, but disappear the moment they get what they want.

Are you aware yet? A friend like that is selfish and only cares about himself or herself and they are using you. So, stop falling into the same trap over and over again.

Here is a piece of advice, though: don’t seek revenge from a toxic friend, that is not the right way to end a friendship. Keep it classy and cut ties with no hard feelings.

In the end, you should only end a friendship when you are completely convinced and are doing exactly what makes you comfortable or happy in your life. Do you believe that this friendship could still bring value to your life? Or that your friend deserves a second chance? Make a decision based on whatever you believe is right.

But most importantly, say no to fake friends and toxicity in your life; begin a new chapter!
