You’d normally think bullying stops once you leave school, but in reality, it doesn’t.

There will always be mean people that enjoy being rude to others so they can hide their insecurities. After all, there are many different types of bullying and different stages that you could be bullied. Yes, most kids are bullied during school years, but you can also suffer from bullying at work or even at home.

Both women and men can be victims of bullying if they pick a toxic person to date. Bullying can be either physical, mental, or both. Any type of bullying can be emotionally draining, which makes it one of the most alarming warning signs of an unhealthy relationship.

If you clicked on this article, you might have been experiencing some of these signs, so take a look and find out some of the most known signs of bullying in a relationship.

1. They’re too controlling

If you feel like your partner is not allowing you to be free or be in “charge,” then it’s an obvious sign you have a controlling partner. But when does this control, which is already a negative aspect, turns into bullying?

One decisive sign is when you start to notice that attached to these controlling behaviors is also a lot of criticizing from your partner. And if you relate to this, you can’t maintain a healthy relationship with this person.

One of the main signs of a toxic relationship is when negativity takes control. All of a sudden, your relationship is not based on positive, happy, loving feelings as it should. Instead, it’s filled with anger, sadness, and fear.

2. They refer to you by using negative names

Name-calling is such childish behavior, but unfortunately, many grown-ups decide to use them.

Normally these names such as bitch and asshole can be said without having a rude or overall negative tone to it.

However, even when saying such names as a joke, it’s important to make sure your partner is ok with it, and their feelings aren’t hurt.

In a normal relationship, you’d call your partner by their name, even love, baby, and other affectionate names, or, sometimes, you might even come up with funny nicknames for each other.
Just know that name-calling is not acceptable.

If your partner is continually calling you these names with a negative tone to them, then you’re in a toxic relationship with a horrible person, and you need to get out.

3. They’re aggressive, both physically and verbally

Your partner will always hurt you with their words, that’s part of being in a relationship. But having fights from time to time is healthy and normal. Hitting you or being verbally mean to you just because it’s not.

From hitting you, forcing you to do things you don’t like, or screaming in your face. These are all signs of a toxic person and not only toxic but dangerous as well.

Sometimes it’s hard for people who suffer from domestic-violence to get away. They feel fear on a deeper level nobody will ever know unless they have gone through the same.

Fortunately, nowadays, there are many “special codes” you can use while calling for a simple pizza delivery that will automatically inform the authorities that you are a target of violence.
It takes courage to stand up for yourself, but at the end of the day, you always have to put your happiness and health first.

4. Threats are constant and terrifying.

Having a partner that is constantly taunting you is a sign of emotional bullying. But what is emotional bullying exactly?

It happens when your partner plays with your feelings and mind for their advantage. Some will use the “If you love me you’ll do this” or “If you tell someone I’ll break up” or, even in worse cases, they might threaten to harm you or someone close to you if you don’t obey to whatever they’re telling you to do.

This is why many women and men don’t report their partners to the police, because of these threats that come from a person that somehow gained power over you, your feelings, actions, and mind.

Most of the time, these are “empty threats,” they wouldn’t be capable of doing anything to one of your family members, for example, but you believe they will because they have you wrapped around their finger.

5. They don’t take your side

One of the unhealthy relationship characteristics is having a partner that doesn’t support you. Not only in your dreams and goals but mostly in front of other people.

No matter whether they’re friends, family, or strangers, you’ll find yourself feeling alone even if your partner is right there.

It’s very common in unhealthy relationships, hearing things like “You can’t do it” ” You won’t make it” “You’re not smart enough,” and so on.

A non-supporting bully partner will always thrive on embarrassing you in front of people and never taking your side.

Remember, a partner who bullies you will always be someone you can’t trust. And how can you have a solid relationship without trust? You just can’t.

Healthy vs. unhealthy relationships are based on one thing: true love.
Not controlling love.
Not tough love.
Not painful love.
But simple, true love. The kind of love that would never turn anyone into a monster. When you truly love someone, you don’t want to harm that person purposely. You want to make them the happiest person ever by giving them all of your love.

Another thing you must have in consideration is your intuition, how you truly feel inside. Don’t try to forget the scars on your body like they’re nothing. Deep down, if you feel broken, you won’t be able to turn the relationship around, it’s best to accept the fact that you’re not happy anymore and need to leave.

And lastly, if you got to the end of this article thinking: “wow, my husband is a bully!” Please do not wait for it to escalate, because it will, sooner than you expect it.

Words will turn into actions, and when you realize it, you’re too broken even to try to escape. Do what’s best for your mental and physical health and get away from that person!
