4. Allow yourself to grieve

You had your mind set on a successful marriage, and things didn’t turn out the way you expected – this is such great expectation, and the fact that it has failed will surely result in great pain and disappointment. You shouldn’t try to speed out the grieving process, but instead, you should embrace it. Like Rainer Maria Rilke once wrote, “Let everything happen to you. Beauty and terror. Just keep going. No feeling is final.” If you feel like crying, cry. If you feel like looking at old pictures and remember the good times you had together, do it. Don’t bottle up your feelings but instead allow them to leave your body and your mind. It’s the only healthy way to deal with a broken heart.

5. Discover your likes and dislikes

When you are in a serious relationship, you often develop shared couple routines. You have a restaurant that you both enjoy, a movie genre that you always pick for movie night, or even a vacation destination that you visit every single year. Now you are alone again, so it’s time to ask yourself: are those things really who you are? Would you go to that restaurant if your partner didn’t enjoy it so much? You have probably changed, and you are most certainly not the same person you were at the beginning of your marriage. Take some time to get to know the person you are now – we promise you you’ll be surprised by the amount of new information you will find out about yourself.

6. Make some changes to your life

Getting a divorce can be a huge change, but it can also be the catalyst you needed to start a new exciting life. Maybe facing something as huge and life-changing as a divorce will provide you with the strength you need to make some changes about other things in your life that don’t suit you anymore. A new career path? A new city? Who knows? The world is your oyster!

7. Being single can be cause for celebration

If you find a way to be the source of your own happiness, being single should be something that deserves celebration. There are many advantages to being on your own – you don’t need to share a bed, you don’t owe explanations to anyone, you can spend your money how you see fit, but most importantly, you are in charge of your own life. When you are sharing your life with someone, you are sharing both the present and the future. As a result, every decision you make has to take someone else into account. Well, not anymore. You are in charge now – the road is all yours!
